McGrath Breast Care Nurse

The following information has been provided by the McGrath Foundation to explain their work :

What is a McGrath Breast Care Nurse?
A McGrath Breast Care Nurse is a registered nurse with specialist training and qualifications in breast care. McGrath Breast Care Nurses co-ordinate care for people with breast cancer, and provide information, support and referral to services.

How can a McGrath Breast Care Nurse help?
McGrath Breast Care Nurses have a thorough understanding of breast cancer and support services. Your McGrath Breast Care Nurse will:
• Provide you and your family with one consistent source of information and care throughout your treatment plan.
• Act as the principal liaison between you, your GP and your breast care team.
• Coordinate all aspects of your care, from diagnosis onwards.

• Be an invaluable source of information regarding other support services for you and your family during the breast cancer experience. As an example, for information about the Lily Bliss mobile bra fitting service, click here.

A McGrath Breast Care Nurse will help you, your family and carers, understand any technical or complex information, enabling you to make the most appropriate treatment and management decisions for you. Continuous support from a McGrath Breast Care Nurse can greatly minimise the stress and trauma of your breast cancer experience. They are able to offer you and your family vital emotional support during this very difficult time.

What a McGrath Breast Care Nurse may do:
• Answer any questions you or your family might have.
• Provide you with information about treatment options.
• Contact and support you during your stay in hospital.
• Provide you with information about breast prosthesis and breast reconstruction.
If needed, organise support for you when you leave hospital.
• Refer you to other services where needed.
• Coordinate your care from diagnosis, through treatment and follow-up.
• Act as a link with all members of the treatment team, including your GP, surgeon and oncologist.
• Link you into support groups and wig libraries.
• Provide an important source of emotional support throughout your experience.

McGrath Breast Care Nurses also conduct information sessions about breast awareness to the general public and other organisations through talks, displays and organised events. This is to encourage greater awareness of the importance of early detection, regardless of age or personal circumstance. The McGrath Breast Care Nurse is available for a friendly chat about whatever concerns you may have.
