Can Assist

Can Assist is a charitable organisation of local volunteers offering support to local families affected by cancer. The funds are raised by donation within the community and remain in the community to help local people.

Can Assist provides practical support services and financial help to families who have a member undergoing treatment for cancer.

  • This support can take the form of :
    - financial assistance, for instance to those people who, because of loss of income due to their cancer, have
    difficulty meeting everyday expenses, including help with pharmacy bills for prescriptions necessary for the treatment of cancer;
    - assistance with the supply of specialised and often costly equipment which is made available to patients registered with the Palliative Care Service;
    - funding for respite night nursing for patients who wish to remain at home rather than to be hospitalised in their last days of living;
    - assistance with overnight accommodation in Sydney at our recommended venue if treatment requires it.
  • Please understand that Can Assist will give assistance where warranted, but it is a volunteer organisation with funds gained solely by donation, so it is unable to pay the total amount of bills.
  • When circumstances warrant, respite nursing can be arranged through the Wingecarribee Palliative Care Service.
  • The Southern Highlands branch of Can Assist meets at 10am on the 2nd Tuesday of every month (save January) at the BDCU Alliance Bank building, 411 Bong Bong Street, Bowral..

Further recognition :

It was very good to see that the great work of our colleagues in the Southern Highlands branch of Can Assist has been acknowledged and appreciated by the Federal member for Throsby, Stephen Jones, who has recognised their continuing achievement in this manner :

"Supporting local causes: Can Assist Southern Highlands

I recently met with Terry and Virginia Hughes who help operate the cancer support group ‘Can Assist’ in the Southern Highlands. They do a great job and I am happy to help promote their work

The valuable support of dedicated volunteers and generous benefactors, gives many people living with cancer in our region financial, physical and emotional support to live with cancer.

Can Assist has operated for over 50 years in the Southern Highlands. They are a non-profit organisation with all funds going directly to helping people living with cancer in need of assistance.

Each month they provide financial assistance to the tune of approximately $4,000, and the number only continues to rise. Anyone who would like to volunteer or donate to this fantastic local cause can do so at PO Box 693, Bowral NSW 2576 or by phoning 0474 647 506."

Alternatively, if you would like to take advantage of the great care and support of Can Assist, they hold regular meetings at 10:00am on the second Thursday of each month (save for January) in the BDCU Alliance Bank building, 411 Bong Bong Street, Bowral.
